From 2012 until 2018 I posted links with brief quotes or comments on things I read on the blog “A Country Doctor Reads“. I had fun doing it, but realized that, once I finally joined Twitter, I could simplify things by posting my very brief items there and any longer pieces derived from my reading right on “A Country Doctor Writes”, but with a separate post category. This way I’m not trying to be in too many places at the same time. People still find interesting items on this retired site, for example The Difference Between Care and Cure, Talk, Think, Listen and Type – Skills of the 21st Century Physician and Are Surgeons More Handsome Than Internists?

I find WordPress’ Blogroll feature a little fussy, so I’ll try listing interesting blogs on this page instead. I’ll also link to other books and places I frequent on this page.

Reference Sites:

UpToDate, App and desktop website, $500/year, comprehensive reference, not always fast for “Quick, what’s the best antibiotic for X disease?” Automatic CME just by using/reading, and reimbursed/provided by many US healthcare employers.

Epocrates, App, quick drug reference, handier than Lexicomp, which is built into UpToDate. Adult and pediatric dosing, interactions, side effects etc. It has many formularies, but the recent update doesn’t have MaineCare, so it is (temporarily, I hope) of no use in checking what’s covered for most of my patients.

GoodRx, App, gives real drug prices at major pharmacy chains.

Cardiovascular Risk Calculator, App, by the American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology, gives risk and impact of interventions like smoking cessation, better blood pressure control etc. I use it at every physical.

CHA2DS2-VASC, App, for anticoagulation decision in atrial fibrillation.

(Under Construction)

Osler said “Listen to your patient, he is telling you the diagnosis”. Duvefelt says “Listen to your patient, he is telling you what kind of doctor he needs you to be”.
